Three Ways to Prepare for this School Year

7 Things I Wish I'd Done More in High School

If you are desperately wondering how you can prepare for this school year, you have come to the right place. I really don’t know why but at least for me it seems like after every summer I come back to school and I feel like everything is reset. Almost like I have to relearn math and become friends again with my friends. If you have ever felt the same way, I have come up with three ways you can be more academically and socially ready for this upcoming school year.

  1. Routine Reset

A routine reset is exactly what it sounds like, it resets your routine. But in this case the reset is gradually getting to bed earlier and getting up earlier, which is something I think everybody on summer break needs to do at one point or another. Also, not quite as important, you should start creating or starting again morning and night routines. A morning routine to help you get some energy on the days where you just want to snooze your alarm, and a nighttime routine to help you wind down from a long day of school. If you need any inspiration or ideas, I suggest you look on Pinterest, even a small prompt like, “after school nighttime routine” will produce a lot of results.

  1. Read!!

Reading will help you so much to prepare academically for this next school year, whether you read a news article once a day, or 20 minutes of a fun novel. Reading will expand your vocabulary, knowledge, and honestly it will feel more productive after reading for 20 minutes rather than scrolling for the same amount of time. Also, reading is a great way to wind down and help you fall asleep, as opposed to falling asleep by watching a show which tells our brains to be active, not calm. Overall, reading even a little bit each day will significantly improve your preparation for the school year.

  1. Call your friends

On to the social preparation, if when you get back to school you feel like you have to reconnect with your friends all over again, I suggest you contact them before school starts. Talking with them before school will definitely help break the ice when you get back, since you’ll probably be picking up from where you left off on a text or call. Also something that really helps me when I get nervous before school is looking at pictures from the following year, almost like a reminder that everything will be like it was in the photo once everyone is comfortable again.

In summary, my top three ways to prepare for this next school year are to reset your routine, read a bit each day, and contact your friends. I hope these tips will help you be more prepared for this upcoming year!
